Nowhere in the world people are willing to bid more for special license plates then in the United Arab Emirates. The little rich state on the Persian Gulf is currently holding the record for the six most expensive license plates in the world. Numbers ‘5’ and ‘7’ were just recently auctioned for 6,75 and 2.97 million dollars respectively.
And now at a recent charity auction in UAE, a license plate with nothing but the number “1″ on it went for a record $14 million.
Saeed Khouri, a member of a wealthy Abu Dhabi family, wouldn’t say how many automobiles he owned or which of them might carry the record-breaking single-digit plate.
The little country is already the proud owner of the biggest shopping mall and the largest tower in the world. And although the United Arab Emirates is in the Middle East, the biggest indoor ski park is also to be found here. Tala Khouri, who recently paid top dollar for license plates ‘5’ and ‘7’ acknowledges the fact that these plates have become status symbols. The ‘5’ plate is mounted on his red Rolls Royce. This very expensive car is still ten times cheaper then the plates mounted on it. The auctions aren’t just for the jet set though. The government donates the money raised by the auctions to a charity foundation dedicated to helping victims of car crashes
In an effort to raise funds for rehabilitation center for victims of traffic accidents, 90 license plates were auctioned off in all, raising a total of $24 million. The previous five such events raised more than $50 million.
