Co-sleeping could be fatal for infants

A countable number of infants die each year because they’ve been accidentally smothered in an adult bed. This is really shocking and should not be taken easily. It is a concernt all over the world. Call it accident, carelessness or too much care/protection for the young one, but it is a reason of worry.

It’s shocking because, despite some warnings that come with official material when you have your baby, almost all mothers sleep with their newborns, particularly in the early weeks when breast-feeding’s happening around the clock and exhaustion prevents you from leaving your prone position more than absolutely necessary. Mothers all over the world comfort and cuddle their newborns this way and we don’t think it’s going to go out of fashion anytime soon, even though there are risks.

While hopefully not many new mothers are drinking themselves stupid with young babies to feed, it has also been said that extreme exhaustion is a kind of stupor that might prevent you from waking properly if you were to be crushing your little one.

Earlier it used to be a problem for the mother to get up every time to feed the infant; but the problem was solved by learning to breastfeed lying down. Due to this, feeding mothers tend to feed and sleep at the same time, without realizing they may be crushing or suffocating the infant.

Breast-feeding mothers and their partners should feel responsible and do their best to avert the risk. The crib or basenet could be as near to the adult bed as possible and safely placed. This will make it convenient for the mother to place the baby safe in the crib after each feeding; partner could be helpful here too.
