The news is that Google is trimming down it work-force by cutting the contract workers. Currently, around 33% of Google work-force is contracting, out of total around 30,000 total. Those figures are not small.
How much trimming down of contractors is going to happen is yet to be seen. Right now, Google doesn’t seem to have any plans to lay-off the employees.

Economy is really at its worst, o’boy.

How your Gmail account can get hacked

Well, it’s not exactly hacking but “a way to read somebody else’s email, without him knowing about it”. If X can create a filter in the Gmail account of Y and forward all email from there into some other account of X, without the knowledge of Y, then that’s the kind of hacking which is possible.

The security vulnerability in Gmail ‘could’ allow an attacker to set up filters on users’ email accounts without their knowledge. This way, the attacker can hijack messages sent to the victim’s Gmail account by redirecting specific messages into the Trash and forwarding a copy to the attacker.

By allowing an unknown/malicious filter into your Gmail account could have multiple consequences:-
you may have some financial institutes attached to that email
you may be sending and receiving email to and from your friends and relatives

the possibilities of damage are endless.

The first thing we should keep in mind is that it is NOT possible for an attacker/hacker to create a filter into another’s Gmail account with his knowledge. But, hackers can force users to create the filter without their knowledge-
“When a user creates a filter in Gmail account, a request is sent to Google servers to get it cleared. The request is in form of a URL with many variables that the browser doesn’t display. However, web browser FireFox and a plugin called Live HTTP Headers, displays exactly what variables are sent to Google servers.
Through a process of elimination, the role of each variable can be ascertained. A particular variable is equivalent to the username which is permanent. Other variable can be determined by tricking the user to visit a web page that has a malicious code. This malicious code steals the cookie from the user and creates an iframe with a URL containing the variables that authorise Gmail to create filter for the user’s account.”

In order to prevent hackers to exploit this loophole, one should frequently monitor Gmail filters and get alerted for any slightest suspicion.

Always log out of the account when not in use.

Before Google devises the mechanism to prevent the hacking; Gmail users have to be extra careful.

Google is still investigating whether it’s actually a Gmail flaw or it involves some ’social engineering’ only. Let’s hope to hear from Google soon.
