Amar and Kundan Singh Pundir are brothers. Younger brother Amar breaks rocks in a mine for a living. Kundan farms their small piece of inherited land. They live in a beautiful but remote hillside village in the clouds of Himachal Pradesh, India.

Both aged in their forties, the two brothers have lived together nearly their whole lives. They are poor and share just about everything: Their home, their work and a wife.

They practice what is known as fraternal polyandry — where the brothers of one family marry the same woman. Why? Tradition and economics.

Life is hard here. The village is precariously perched on the side of a very steep hill about 6,000ft up. Most of the villagers survive off tiny plots of cropland. In this difficult terrain there isn’t enough land to go around. So, instead of finding separate wives and splitting up their inherited property, the brothers marry the same woman and keep their land together.

Wife Indira Devi says life with two husbands isn’t easy. But like any married couple they fight mostly over mundane stuff, except there are three spouses instead of two.

One thing they agreed on was the need to have children; They have three. So how does a married trio deal with sex?

“We make shifts, change shifts and sleep on alternate days. We have to make shifts otherwise it won’t work,” Kundan says.

“To run our families we have to do this, overcome the hurdles as well and then we have to control our hearts from feeling too much,” Amar adds.

To outsiders their arrangement may seem odd, but in the village of about 200 it is the norm.Typically the marriages are arranged and women have two husbands. But some wives have three or four depending on how many brothers there are in a family.

Polyandry is illegal in India but socially acceptable here. No one from the government seems to bother the villagers about the law.

“It’s been going on for ages. My sister in law has two husbands, my mother in law also has two husbands,” Indira says.

And as to the question of which husband is the biological father of the children — the Pundir’s don’t know and don’t care.Even as modern society arrives in this ancient village through satellite dishes and mobile phones, the Pundirs say they want their age-old tradition to continue with their children.

He and his younger brother have already discussed it and will marry the same woman.

Daughter Sunita isn’t so sure.

“I would like one husband,” she says.

But when asked if she will marry for love or tradition, Sunita’s answer makes it clear the tradition of marrying more than one man will continue with the next generation.

“I will never leave our tradition even if I have to forgo love. I will never spoil my parents’ reputation and my brothers.’”

Is India a poor Country- Revelation on Swiss bank accounts

Filed Under (Business, News, OffBeat) by Rajesh Menghnani on 27-08-2008

Tagged Under : , , , , , , , , ,

Don’t know how far this is true, but a friend of mine forwarded me this

This is so shocking…….wish black money deposits was an Olympics event….India would have won a gold medal hands down. The second best Russia has 4 times lesser deposit. US is not even there in the counting in top five !! India has more money in swiss banks than all the other countries
combined

Recently, due to international pressure, Swiss govt. agreed to disclose the names of the account holders only if the respective govts formally asked for it. Indian govt. is not asking for the details…….no marks for guessing why ????

We need to start a movement to pressurize the govt. to do so !! this is perhaps the only way, and a golden opportunity, to expose the high and mighty and weed out corruption !!

Please read on……and forward to all the honest Indians to…..like somebody is forwarding to you…….and build a ground-swell of support for action !!

Is India poor, who says? Ask Swiss banks With personal account deposit bank of $1500 billion in foreign reserve which have been misappropriated, an amount 13 times larger than the country’s foreign debt, one needs to rethink if India is a poor country?.

DISHONEST INDUSTRIALISTS, scandalous politicians and corrupt IAS, IRS, IPS officers have deposited in foreign banks in their illegal personal accounts a sum of about $ 1500 billion, which have been misappropriated by them.

This amount is about 13 times larger than the country’s foreign debt. With this amount 45 crore poor people can get Rs 1,00,000 each. This huge amount has been appropriated from the people of India by exploiting and betraying
them.

Once this huge amount of black money and property comes back to India , the entire foreign debt can be repaid in 24 hours. After paying the entire foreign debt, we will have surplus amount, almost 12 times larger than the foreign debt. If this surplus amount is invested in earning interest, the amount of interest will be more than the annual budget of the Central government. So even if all the taxes are abolished, then also the Central government will be able to maintain the country very comfortably.

Some 80,000 people travel to Switzerland every year, of whom 25,000 travel very frequently.

“Obviously, these people won’t be tourists. They must be travelling there for some other reason,” believes an official involved in tracking illegal money. And, clearly, he isn’t referring to the commerce ministry bureaucrats who’ve been flitting in and out of Geneva ever since the World Trade Organisation (WTO) negotiations went into a tailspin!

Just read the following details and note how thesedishonest industrialists, scandalous politicians, corrupt officers, cricketers, film actors, illegal sex trade and protected wildlife operators, to name just a few, sucked this country’s wealth and prosperity. This may be the picture of deposits in Swiss banks only. What about other international banks?

Black money in Swiss banks — Swiss Banking Association report, 2006 details bank deposits in the territory of Switzerland by nationals of following countries:

Top five
India—- $1,456 billion
Russia —$ 470 billion
UK ——-$390 billion
Ukraine - $100 billion
China —–$ 96 billion

Now do the maths - India with $1456 billion or $1.4 trillion has more money in Swiss banks than rest of the world combined. Public loot since 1947:

Can we bring back our money? It is one of the biggest loots witnessed by mankind — the loot of the Aam Aadmi (common man) since 1947, by his brethren occupying public office. It has been orchestrated by politicians, bureaucrats and some businessmen.

The list is almost all-encompassing. No wonder, everyone in India loots with impunity and without any fear.

What is even more depressing in that this ill-gotten wealth of ours has been stashed away abroad into secret bank accounts located in some of the world’s best known tax havens. And to that extent the Indian economy has been stripped of its wealth.

Ordinary Indians may not be exactly aware of how such secret accounts operate and what are the rules and regulations that go on to govern such tax havens. However, one may well be aware of ‘Swiss bank accounts,’ the shorthand for murky dealings, secrecy and of course pilferage from developing countries into rich developed ones.

In fact, some finance experts and economists believe tax havens to be a conspiracy of the western world against the poor countries. By allowing the proliferation of tax havens in the twentieth century, the western world explicitly encourages the movement of scarce capital from the developing countries to the rich.

In March 2005, the Tax Justice Network (TJN) published a research finding demonstrating that $11.5 trillion of personal wealth was held offshore by rich individuals across the globe.

The findings estimated that a large proportion of this wealth was managed from some 70 tax havens.
Further, augmenting these studies of TJN, Raymond Baker — in his widely celebrated book titled ‘Capitalism’ s Achilles Heel: Dirty Money and How to Renew the Free Market System’ — estimates that at least $5 trillion have been shifted out of poorer countries to the West since the mid-1970.

It is further estimated by experts that one per cent of the world’s population holds more than 57 per cent of total global wealth, routing it invariably through these tax havens. How much of this is from India is anybody’s guess.

What is to be noted here is that most of the wealth of Indians parked in these tax havens is illegitimate money acquired through corrupt means.

Naturally, the secrecy associated with the bank accounts in such places is central to the issue, not their low tax rates as the term ‘tax havens’ suggests. Remember Bofors and how India could not trace the ultimate beneficiary of those transactions because of the secrecy associated with
these bank accounts?

A boat docked in a tiny Goan village.

A tourist from Mumbai complimented the Goan fisherman on the quality of his fish and asked how long it took him to catch them.

“Not very long,” answered the fisherman.
“But then, why didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” asked the Mumbaite.

The Goan fisherman explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet his needs and those of his family.

The Mumbaite asked, “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

“I sleep late, fish a little, play with my children, and take a siesta with my wife. In the evenings, I go into the village to see my friends, play guitar, sing a few songs… I have a full life.”

The Mumbaite interrupted, “I have an MBA from IIM-A, and I can help you! You should start by fishing longer every day. You can then sell the extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue, you can buy a bigger boat.”

“And after that?” asked the Goan.

“With the extra money the larger boat will bring, you can buy a second one and a third one and so on until you have an entire fleet of trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can then negotiate directly with the processing plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can then leave this little village and move to Panjim, or even Mumbai. From there you can direct your huge new enterprise.”

“How long would that take?” asked the Goan.

“Twenty, perhaps twenty-five years,” replied the Mumbaite.

“And after that?”

“Afterwards? Well my Friend, That’s when it gets really interesting,” chuckled the Mumbaite, “When your business gets really big, you can start selling stocks and make millions!”

“Millions? Really? And after that?” asked the Goan.

“After that you’ll be able to retire, live in a tiny village near the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch a few fish, take a siesta with your wife and spend your evenings doing what you like with your buddies.”

“With all due respect sir, but that’s exactly what I am doing now. So what’s the point wasting 25 years?” asked the Goan.

And the moral of the story is…

Know where you’re going in life. You may already be there.

Life in the present world is indeed a rat race. Many who have qualifications from reputed universities too do not know where they are going in life.

Three things were always on the rise in India

Population: Over a Billion, second most populous country in the world
Cellphones: India is the world’s fastest-growing mobile telephone market with 270 million users according to the latest official figures, up 57 percent in just one year
AIDS:2.5 million people live with HIV in India.

High population density, low literacy levels and consequently low levels of awareness, has been the foremost reason for the most challenging public health problems ever faced in India. A country of over billion people out of which about 2.5 million people live with HIV in India.

To promote safe sex and tackle the growing HIV/AIDS epidemic, BBC World Service Trust charity has come out with an innovative cellphone ringtone. The “condom a cappella” has been designed to break down Indians’ reluctance to discuss condom use and to make wearing a condom more acceptable.

The cellphone ringtone chants “condom, condom!”.It can be downloaded at condomcondom.org.

Organisers of the campaign, funded by the foundation set up by Microsoft mogul Bill Gates and his wife Melinda, hope the ringtone will become a craze among young Indians.

Radharani Mitra, creative director of the BBC World Service Trust has a great point “Ringtones have become such personal statements that a specially created condom ringtone seemed just the right way of combining a practical message with a fun approach,”

“The idea is to tackle the inhibitions and taboos that can be associated with condoms.”

Condom, Condom, Yes Papa

That said, it originated from the Land of Kamasutra and now it’s displaying on Google. It is very apparent from the fact that Pakistan and India stand amongst the top Google search of the average worldwide traffic of the keyword “sex” in all years.

Internet users in India and Pakistan are the world’s most frequent searchers for Web sites using the keyword “sex” on Google search engines, according to statistics provided by Google Inc (Please brows this link)

Either the Indian sub continent is too inquisitive for sex or has a voracious appetite for it but whatever it is, it seems to be sex starved and can’t seem to get enough of it. At the same time the need for educating themselves on sex is also at its peak.

While Pakistan as a country stays on top, Indian cities Delhi and Chennai take the cake. 3 out of the top 10 cities are from India with Delhi being at Number 1 followed by Chennai at close second and Mumbai at Number 4.

What is also interesting to note is that seven out of top ten countries are Muslim countries.

Well, now don’t get surprised by this, Here is an extended list of top searches for other keywords

Terrorism: Pakistan on top

Extremism: Pakistan on top

Taliban: Pakistan on Top

Jihad: Pakistan on Top

Child Sex: Pakistan on Top, Top three cities - Delhi, India, Chennai, India, Mumbai, India

Sexy, Sexy Girl, Nude, Sexy Video: Pakistan and India amongst top three

Last but not the least

Education: Pakistan and India on top

Sex Education: Pakistan and India take the number 1 and number 2 spot.

From Sex to Education to Sex Education – That completes the cycle of Karma Sutra

Hasbro, let users play the game until you perfect your game

Creators of the popular Scrabble knockoff, Scrabulous, had to S-U-S-P-E-N-D the word game on Facebook in the United States and Canada. Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla suspended the game after being hit with a lawsuit, disappointing wordsmiths who have spent hours playing the game on Facebook.

Hasbro Inc., the company that owns the North American rights to the word game, last week sued Rajat and Jayant  in Calcutta, India, who created the Scrabulous program. Separately, Hasbro asked Facebook to block the program, something the site resisted despite risks of losing immunity protection from copyright lawsuits.

Facebook says the Agarwalla brothers, not the company, made the decision.

Earlier this year Video game maker Electronic Arts Inc. “released an official version for American and Canadian Facebook users under a licensing deal with Hasbro. But the authorized Scrabble has been attracting only 15,000 daily users, compared with some half-million for Scrabulous.” That authorized version is actually still in a “beta” test mode, and encountered technical problems Tuesday.

Facebook users who tried to access Scrabulous on Tuesday were simply told the game was disabled “until further notice,” and many Facebook users updated their one-line status messages on the site to mourn the suspension.

The game continues to work at the developers’ Web site, Scrabulous.com, but users must sign up and start games afresh.

What a shame, Hasbro could have at least let Facebook users play the game (Scrabulous) until they got their game perfected. It came up today, but kept crashing, and now it seems to be completely down.
