My question is, would it be funny if instead of Sanford it was James Earl Jones? Colin Powell? or Morgan Freedman? Probably not. Also, would it have been funny after Bush was elected to do the same thing and have maybe George Burns or Bob Hope next to his picture? You have to ask yourself why you are laughing? I’m typically not overly sensitive but to me this is in-your-face racism, no matter how you slice it.
It is not an offense is anybody. If the President-elect was a white or asian or whatever, it would’ve been the same.
What I mean is - one is trying to just highlight the next president, and not that he belongs to a particular race.
It’s interesting to hear other people’s perspective. Maybe there is some truth in everything we are all saying about it.
Harvey I’m sick of people trying to disguise racism with subtle offbeat humor. Why did you select a picture of Fred Sanford? Is his character one that people look up to? His character displays most old stereotypes of blacks. I’m white my husband is black we have been married for 30 years. We live in a white community where one of my children have had pictures of lynchings tapped to their locker. This did not happen in 1940 or 1960, it happened in the 90’s. So don’t tell me racism isn’t out there and that your column doesn’t bring out all those old sterotypes and give them some credence.

I thought the picture was funny… Redd Foxx is an old, craggy guy - just look at him. (My first thought was the picture was Foxx and not Sanford.) And what a pitty it would be if the new President ends up looking like that - he is so good-looking now! I do honestly hate to think what the office will do to him, knowing what it had done to all the other Presidents! God help Michelle if he starts looking like Redd Foxx!
